Nursery Narcissism

There comes a time in every church where you must place special attention on the nursery. To most pastors the nursery is like Cinderella, the forgotten step child who stays in the attic. Grandma Betty has been keeping the kids for 40 years and I have never heard a complaint, if it's not broke don't fix it. But, will growing young families feel comfortable in your church and what happens when Grandma Betty dies.

We have had a large influx of young families and I am now officially the pastor over nursery. These are the moments when you ask yourself. Where are the Hyons? I wonder if George needs and job. :-)

I need some help! Please take a moment to answer the following questions, feel free to get your wives involved on this one:

1) How do your nursery classes break down? New Born - Pre K (0-4 years)
2) Do you have a nursery coordinator? The Latona and Gertrude of your church.
3) Do you pay your coordinator?
4) How do you make sure your "teachers" get to the main service?
5) What is something your church does very well in this area?
6) What is an area of improvement for you?

3 comments:

  1. 1) Infants; Walkers (when they walk they move up); 2s & 3s; 4s-Kind.
    2) Yes, a nursery/Early Childhood coordinator is extremely necessary.
    3) Our coordinator is not paid, although we have offered to pay.
    4) By this I think you mean, do replacements come on time? Not always, we are continuing to remind constantly; sometimes the coordinator will stay and let people go until replacements come; and we constantly remind people to be on time.
    5) We have a coordinating team, with other involved people, who have done an excellent job keeping the facility up to date - paint, decor, new toys and the right kinds of toys, set up, resources for teachers, etc. Also having our schedule online has been a great step.
    6) Scheduling and recruiting is a never ending need.

  2. This post was from our Pastor for Parent and Children's Discipleship. I thought it would be best if he answered rather than me! Thanks Craig.

  3. Hey brothers,
I could really use your help. Has anyone taught a class and/or do you know of resources that help (encourage) parents know how to monitor their teenagers use of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc. If anyone has done a class or knows of material and can pass it along that would be great. Andrew sent a great article out a couple months ago by Al Molher call Analog Parents in a Digital World and it was great. Would love your help...
